Modify Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings

The following settings instruct the SMTP server which sends your email, to save a copy to your Sent folder.

By preventing Outlook from uploading your Sent message in the previous step and instead relying on the SMTP (sending) server to do so, you're halving your bandwidth use when sending messages and speeding up the process at the same time.

For Authentication select User Name and Password

Enter your email address with a slight modification, appending the string +sent after the user portion of your email address.

The below assumes your email address is user@example.com.

If your email address were sam@greeneggsandham.com you would enter sam+sent@greeneggsandham.com.

Enter your mailbox password, as you did when adding the mailbox.

Press [OK]

Initial Configuration Complete

At this point, your mailbox is configured.

You will see your INBOX, along with the various default folders.

The steps which follow below should be completed in order to test the customised SMTP (sending) feature.

Test SMTP Configuration

Compose a new message.

Send the test message to the same address as the mailbox which you have configured in these steps.

Press [Send]

Review the Sent folder, possibly waiting a few seconds for the message to appear.

Right-click on the message and select View Source

A new window will appear, showing the message's envelope details.

These details include the To, From and other fields of the message, as well as other information about the message, including which servers have handled it and recipient and authentication details.

Review the message, looking for the email address which you have recently configured, paying attention to the highlighted items below.

In particular ...

Find the top-most Delivered-To field - it should include the +sent string, before the @ sign.

Find the bottom-most Original-Authentication-Results field and confirm that your email address, with the +sent modification is shown immediately after smtp.auth=.
